G20 Protests in London
A couple of weeks ago we had the G-20 summit in London. To tie in with the media attention of the summit, there were a number of protest arranged in London. The original protest was meant to be about anti-capitalism – protesting about the failure of capitalism and the role it played in the global financial crisis, but a number of other protest groups also joined in, including the Climate Change camp, Anarchists and so on.
The main protests took place on April 1st (called financial fool’s day by the protesters), in the city of London, mainly around the Bank of London and Bishopsgate, which is just across the river from my office in London Bridge. Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera in work on the 1st, but I did remember to bring it in on the 2nd when I heard there were meant to be further protests, so in my lunch break I headed across the river to see what I could find.
Although it was much quieter than the 1st, there were still plenty of police and a few protesters (and plenty of journalists and reporters) kicking about. Either way, it certainly wasn’t your normal Thursday lunchtime in the city, so it was a nice gentle introduction to editorial / protest photography, which it turns out I quite enjoyed. As I said, it was pretty quiet, but while I was at Bank, a few protesters were holding a memorial to Ian Tomlinson, a newspaper seller who had died the previous evening. At the time it was thought that he had died of natural causes, but video footage has since emerged which revealed that he was attacked (apparently unprovoked) by police officers prior to his death, and an independent police enquiry has now been launched into his death.
